Anfield hero Ray Houghton feels Jurgen Klopp knows he saw ‘something special’ after Mohamed Salah scored an ‘arrogant’ goal in Liverpool’s Europa League win over LASK.

The Reds started their European tour with a 3-1 win on the road on Thursday night. Darwin Nunez (56’) bagged Liverpool’s first goal of the game to draw Klopp’s squad level. While Luis Diaz (63’) and Salah (88’) ensured the Merseyside natives started Group E with three points.

Florian Flecker (14’) stunned Liverpool in the opening exchanges to hand LASK a shock lead at the Raiffeisen Arena. But the Austrian Bundesliga side eventually wilted to the powers of the Premier League team. Toulouse drew 1-1 away to Union SG in the other Group E fixture.

Salah helps Liverpool beat LASK in the Europa League

LASK were worth their lead with the quality of Flecker’s goal after the midfielder fired home from the edge of the area. But Thomas Sageder’s team gifted Liverpool their chance to draw level. Philipp Ziereis clipped Diaz as he attempted to make a block and gave away a penalty.

Nunez made no mistake from the spot as he buried the ball into the bottom-left corner. Diaz then secured Liverpool the lead after meeting Harvey Elliott’s low cross. But Salah turned on the charm to settle the game late on as the 31-year-old scored his third goal of the term yet.

Salah wrapped up Liverpool’s result in the closing stages at LASK by poking the ball through Tobias Lawal’s legs. But the magic had already started before the Egyptian shot after dipping past two defenders to work space. He was also instrumental in the Reds winning possession.

Salah leapt on Andres Andrade when the centre-back slipped to force him into Nunez’s path. The forward then kept his head on a swivel to stay in space before chopping towards the six-yard box. He then knew the only way to score would be to slot the ball through Lawal’s legs.

Salah astounded Houghton with his arrogance to score

The intelligence that Salah showed when scoring Liverpool’s third goal at LASK in the Europa League astounded Anfield hero Houghton. The Reds’ two-time First Division-winning player admired his arrogance to attempt the shot. He also felt Klopp knew just how special it was.

Houghton said on talkSPORT (21/09, 19:33): “The way he just moves his body from one side to the other, the arrogant flick. Klopp knows he’s seen something special from Salah there!”
