Joel Matip has hinted that he wants to stay at Liverpool despite the defender’s contract coming to an end next year.

Speaking to Sky Germany, the centre-back teased that he is willing to remain at Anfield, even though current rumours suggest that Matip will be released at the end of the season.

Matip is one of Liverpool’s longest-serving players in the current squad, with the former Schalke 04 player a cult hero at Anfield under Jurgen Klopp.

And the defender seems keen on staying at Anfield, with Matip saying: “Here in Liverpool, with these absolute top conditions, you don’t just walk away.

“In addition, I also feel incredibly comfortable here in my private life. I think it’s desirable not to change clubs all the time. But everyone has to decide for themselves. In any case, I find consistency helpful.

“I’m at an age where I don’t think so much about the future anymore. I try to make the most of every day and don’t look too far ahead. If it was only these two clubs in the end [Schalke 04 & Liverpool], I would be perfectly happy. But in football, you never know exactly.”

Matip must know that Liverpool don’t want to keep him

Barring a miracle, Matip will be released by Liverpool at the end of the season, with the £100,000-a-week defender expected to be moved on from the Reds.

The 32-year-old has enjoyed a sensational career at Liverpool where Matip has won essentially every trophy under the sun for the Anfield side.

However, all things have to come to an end, and Matip’s time with Liverpool will likely conclude in 2024, something the defender must be painfully aware of by now.
