Athletic Club president has said he is working to tie Nico Williams to a new contract amid reports that Liverpool are interested in the forward.

Speaking to Marca, Jon Uriarte revealed that talks are underway between Athletic and Williams to extend the attacker’s current deal, which is due to expire at the end of this season.

Labelled as ‘unstoppable’ by Mundo Deportivo, the 21-year-old is regarded by many as one of Europe’s most exciting talents, and Liverpool could be an ideal destination for Williams.

Mohamed Salah’s uncertain future at Anfield makes the Athletic youngster a prime target for Liverpool should their Egyptian superstar leave in 2024.

However, Athletic are now making moves to stop Williams from leaving, with the club’s president now confirming that talks are ongoing with the forward.

Uriarte said: “Nico, like his family, Inaki, his mother and others, are very happy in Bilbao. They love Athletic and they love our project. We are working with both sides so that he can stay.”

Williams’ loyalty to Athletic is easy to understand, with the La Liga giants giving the forward a platform to succeed and become one of the most exciting youngsters in all of Europe.

Yet for Liverpool, they could easily convince the striker to leave Basque Country for Merseyside, especially if the prospect of replacing Salah is on the table.

As we know, the Reds are clearly interested in the attacker, and Williams could be sold on the prospect of leaving Atheltic if Liverpool coming in with an offer.
