Liverpool made a number of big signings this summer but one player they didn’t manage to sign was Spanish forward, Nico Williams.

Reports earlier this week suggested that the Reds had made an enquiry about signing Williams. In the end, no deal was done as figures at Anfield focussed on new midfielders.

And now, according to Sport, Liverpool will need to beat off Barcelona if they want to sign Williams.

Liverpool tried to sign Nico Williams but Barcelona now interested

According to Spanish publication Sport, Barcelona are now showing a heavy interest in signing Williams.

The Catalan club have moved to lower their wage bill massively over the last few seasons and could be primed to make some big signings in the next couple of windows if things pan out.

Williams is reportedly being looked at by Liverpool, Newcastle and Aston Villa over in England. Indeed, Unai Emery is said to be a huge fan of Williams and pushed to try to bring him to Villa Park.

For Liverpool, there could be a need to replace Mo Salah over the next few transfer windows.

The ‘incredible‘ Williams fits the profile to replace Salah in terms of his speed and ability to create and score goal.

Williams has yet to get off the mark in La Liga this season but has created four goals in his four appearances.

RTK’s View: One to watch to replace Mo Salah

We all know the stark reality of the situation surrounding Salah so it makes perfect sense for the club to be looking at potential replacements.

Nico Williams has looked the part at times for Atleti and for Spain, he’s also shown signs he is really developing into a top international player.

For Liverpool, the key to replacing Salah eventually will be getting players who have some of the Egyptian’s skillset, while being young enough to progress and develop.

And at around £43m, Wiilliams might end up being a bit of a bargain for the Reds to pursue.
