Fabrizio Romano has stated that Pedro Goncalves is not looking to leave Sporting Lisbon despite reports this week linking the forward to Liverpool.

Speaking to CaughtOffisde, the transfer guru revealed that sources close to the Portuguese international have detailed that there are no plans to leave Lisbon.

O Jogo reported earlier this week that Liverpool are one of a handful of Premier League clubs interested in signing Goncalves, who has an €80m (£68m) release clause.

Able to play as a central midfielder and out on the wing, it’s easy to see why Liverpool would be interested in a player as versatile as Goncalves.

Yet as things stand, the 25-year-old isn’t leaving Portugal, with Romano saying about Goncalves: “Sporting always wanted to keep Pedro so it was never a negotiation last summer.

“For sure he’s going to be one to watch in the next years, but at the moment people close to him guarantee there’s nothing decided or close.”

Liverpool’s transfer plans hinge on if Mohamed Salah leaves Anfield in January, yet even if such a situation happens, it might be wise to wait until the summer to pursue Goncalves.

As we know, the 25-year-old is happy with Sporting and has indicated that he doesn’t want to leave just yet, which puts Liverpool in a tough position.

As a result, waiting until the summer of 2024 to move for Goncalves might be the best plan for Liverpool, where the prospect of UEFA Champions League football could be a major selling point for the Reds.
