Liverpool are reportedly interested in Sporting Lisbon star Pedro Goncalves, with other Premier League sides interested.

According to O Jogo, the Reds remain keen on signing the 25-year-old midfielder, who has in recent years been likened to Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes.

Regarded by many as one of the best players in Portugal, Goncalves would be quite the addition to Jurgen Klopp’s side, though some issues are already on the table if Liverpool were to pursue a deal.

For starters, Sporting are not interested in a sale, with Goncalves himself having a release clause worth €80m (£68m), a fee Liverpool might be unwilling to meet.

Moreover, as per the report, Goncalves isn’t sold on leaving Lisbon just yet, with Sporting looking to compete for the Portuguese title this season alongside Benfica and FC Porto.

Indeed, Goncalves could be quite the signing for Liverpool in January, yet current factors mean that a transfer might be unlikely in 2024.

Replacing Mohamed Salah is firmly on Liverpool’s mind after what happened this summer, and whilst Goncalves could be an option, the winger might not cut it for the Reds.

The versatile attacking midfielder is clearly good enough to make the leap from Portugual to the Premier League, but Liverpool might be too big a jump for Goncalves.

Liverpool’s interest in Goncalves makes sense on paper, but for what the Reds need, the Portuguese international might be someone the Anfield side have to pass up on heading into 2024.
