Dominik Szoboszlai saluted Liverpool teammate Cody Gakpo after he scored for the Netherlands last night.

Gakpo slammed home the Dutch’s second goal in a 3-0 win over Kostas Tsimikas’ Greece last night. Virgil van Dijk also got the full 90 minutes, trying out a new position in the second half.

After the game, Gakpo took to Instagram to share his delight at having scored back home in Eindhoven.

“Feeling blessed to score again in my hometown,” wrote the Liverpool player, after notching his first of the season.

Obviously, Van Dijk was happy to see his Reds colleague bag, and responded appropriately with an orange love heart. Szoboszlai was also in the comments, offering up a Darwin Nunez inspired ‘salute’ emoji.

Gakpo gets off the mark

Hopefully the goal last night signals a kicking off of Gakpo’s season.

Although he has an excuse having been deployed in midfield for Liverpool’s opening two games of the season, he’s yet to score for the Reds in 23/24.

That’s fine, of course, others have been sticking plenty in. If there’s one thing Jurgen Klopp isn’t short of, then it’s fire power up-front.

But for his own confidence, it was important that Gakpo find the net sooner rather than later.

With Nunez and Diogo Jota already on the scoresheet for the season, the 24-year-old found himself on the bench last time out against Aston Villa.

He obviously won’t want to stay there, and showing the killer instincts he did last night will remind Liverpool fans that perhaps he shouldn’t.

On form, Gakpo is probably the most all-round of Liverpool’s forwards, perhaps even including Mohamed Salah. Clever, technical, quick and lethal, it’s great to see him getting his eye in.
