Jurgen Klopp was reportedly seen enthusiastically clapping Joe Gomez after the Liverpool defender’s tracking of Aston Villa winger Moussa Diaby.

According to the Athletic, the Liverpool boss loved the 26-year-old’s approach to handling the French winger, who has been a sensation for Villa this season since arriving from Bayer Leverkusen.

Gomez partnered Joel Matip in defence with Virgil van Dijk out through suspension and Ibrahima Konate once again on the treatment table.

Despite some pre-match worries, the pair were imperious against Villa, with Gomez in particular enjoying another great performance after last weekend’s heroics against Newcastle United.

With Liverpool failing to add to their defensive cover in the summer, Gomez could become a key player for Klopp this season, and the boss already seems impressed with what the defender has managed this campaign.

Indeed, Diaby has proven to be a menace in the Premier League already this season, and Gomez shutting the winger down is quite the feat from the 26-year-old.

Gomez’s performances last season for Liverpool gave little hope that the former Charlton Athletic man would even be a part of Klopp’s plans this year, let alone starting so early into the campaign.

However, football is a sport that’s all about redemption arcs, and Gomez is experiencing one right now at Anfield, with the defender in his best vein of form for some time.

Whilst an international break has come at the worst time for Gomez, the defender could easily retain his starting position for when football returns later this month, alongside Van Dijk or Konate.
