Gareth Southgate has voiced his concerns about Kalvin Phillips’ playing time, with the England midfielder recently linked with Liverpool.

Speaking to the press via Football Daily, the Three Lions manager revealed that the Manchester City player’s situation at the Etihad Stadium is far from ideal, with Phillips yet to play this season.

Liverpool have been linked with the £45m-rated midfielder this summer, and despite not featuring once for City, Phillips has retained his place in the England squad for next month’s fixtures.

With the likes of James Ward-Prowse missing out, Phillips’ call-up is quite a surprise for many England fans, and Southgate has now said that his playing time at City is a major concern.

Indeed, the lack of minutes hasn’t stopped Liverpool from being linked with the midfielder, though Phillips could consider an exit from City tomorrow on transfer deadline day.

Southgate said about Phillips: “It’s important we have some experience in that area of the pitch. Clearly with Harry [Maguire] and Kalvin Phillips – it’s far from ideal that they’re not playing football.”

Many will question Southgate’s decision to call up Phillips despite not playing once this season, and for Liverpool, they should now reconsider their own stance on the midfielder.

There’s no denying that the 27-year-old would be a good signing if given time at Liverpool, yet Southgate’s comments are quite eye-opener for Phillips.

And for Liverpool, this should make the Reds alert that they should not move for the City midfielder, with better options out there on the market.
