Jose Enrique criticised Virgil van Dijk’s performance against Newcastle United as the Liverpool captain was sent off in the opening half.

Taking to Twitter, the former Anfield defender was not pleased with what he saw from the 32-year-old centre-back, with Van Dijk being sent off in the 28th minute.

With Newcastle leading 1-0, the opening half could not have gone any worse for Liverpool, with Van Dijk set to miss the Reds’ next three Premier League matches.

And Enrique was far from impressed with what he’s seen from the defender, with the Spaniard also making the call for Liverpool to sign defensive competition for Van Dijk.

Indeed, Liverpool’s midfield transfer crusade has taking up most of their time and attention this summer, yet Van Dijk’s red card could give Jurgen Klopp some food for thought heading into the new week.

Van Dijk being absent from Liverpool is nothing short of a disaster, and the defender’s sending-off against Newcastle could cost the Reds in the coming weeks.

The Dutch international is easily one of Liverpool’s best players and the most important outfield figure in Klopp’s system, with Van Dijk now giving the boss another selection headache.

Defence should have been added to this summer when funds were available, and Van Dijk might have just cost his side dearly in the weeks to come.
