Eddie Howe has admitted that Newcastle United were keen on Dominik Szoboszlai before the Hungarian’s move to Liverpool this summer.

Speaking to the press via Newcastle World, the English coach revealed that the 22-year-old was a player the Magpies liked before Liverpool activated Szoboszlai’s £60m release clause at RB Leipzig.

Since moving to Merseyside, Szoboszlai has impressed greatly under Jurgen Klopp, with the playmaker expected to start for Liverpool against Newcastle today.

Yet things could have been a lot different had the Toon moved first for Szoboszlai, with Howe admitting that Newcastle liked the Liverpool player’s profile.

Howe said when asked about Newcastle’s Szoboszlai interest: “Sure we liked him. He’s had a really good start to his career, captain of his country at a really young age, I think that tells you about his mentality.

Very good technical player. It was quite an expensive purchase for us. There’s lots that goes into every transfer but he’s certainly one that we liked.”

Football is a funny game where one transfer can send ripples throughout the entire sport, and Liverpool beating Newcastle to Szoboszlai could have done just that.

The playmaker has impressed for Liverpool since moving to Anfield this summer, and Szoboszlai could be key in the Reds beating Newcastle to a UEFA Champions League spot this season.

Moreover, the winger’s performances for Liverpool could take the Merseyside club one step further and potentially to a title, something Newcastle can only dream about.
