Brighton & Hove Albion CEO Paul Barber has quizzed Moises Caicedo’s decision to join Chelsea over Liverpool this summer.

Speaking on TalkSport, the Seagulls official questioned the Ecuador international’s decision to reject a move to Anfield despite Liverpool making a £110m offer to sign the 21-year-old last week.

With Chelsea spending the entire summer putting in the groundwork to sign Caicedo, though, it makes sense why the youngster opted to turn down Liverpool for a move to Stamford Bridge.

However, one figure who is still confused by the decision is Brighton chief Barber, who said on Caicedo’s move to Chelsea over Liverpool: “Liverpool’s a fantastic football club.

“For any footballer to have the chance to play at Liverpool, you’d imagine that they’d be running up the M6 but it wasn’t to be. Moises and his advisors decided for whatever reason that London was their preferred destination, and ultimately Chelsea.”

Caicedo’s decision to join a Chelsea side with no European football and a structure that remains as shaky as it was 12 months ago could go one of two ways for the midfielder, which is why the player might regret not choosing Liverpool.

Although the 21-year-old will be partnering Enzo Fernandez in one of the most exciting midfield duos in all of Europe, there’s no guarantees that Caicedo will be a success at Chelsea, especially in the current structure.

Indeed, with Liverpool desperate for a defensive midfielder, Caicedo could have been a dream signing playing for a perfect manager in Jurgen Klopp, who could have got the best out of the Ecuadorian at Anfield.
