Roy Keane has predicted Liverpool to finish in the top-four at best this season as the Reds drew 1-1 in their Premier League opener against Chelsea.

Speaking on Sky Sports, the former Manchester United captain hinted that Jurgen Klopp’s side will be nowhere near the Premier League title race, with a top-four spot the best Liverpool can hope for.

The Merseyside giants entertained at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea, another side Keane has tipped to only qualify for the UEFA Champions League this season at most.

And given the options Liverpool currently have in the squad, it’s hard to see how the Reds will challenge for the title, especially without a defensive midfielder amongst their ranks.

Indeed, Liverpool finishing in a Champions League spot would be a good achievement this season, and Keane has tipped this accolade to be the best the Reds can manage in the league.

Keane said: “The best for Liverpool and Chelsea would be top four. It depends on what happens in the next few weeks in terms of the signings but top four would be the best for either of them, I think.”

Once in a blue moon Keane will say a comment that hits the nail on the head, and the Irish pundit has managed just that this weekend with Liverpool’s Premier League aspirations for the season.

The Reds have gone about their summer business unusually, with no defensive midfielder signed and penny pinching over Romeo Lavia whilst also launching a record-breaking bid for Moises Caicedo.

Liverpool can, of course, fight for the title if they can pull off a signing or two before the window closes. But as things stand, the Reds will miss out on top spot by some distance.
