Gary Nevilla has highlighted Liverpool’s need for a holding midfielder after a mistake from Alexis Mac Allister against Chelsea.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Super Sunday coverage, the pundit spotted the Argentine international losing Enzo Fernandez early on in Liverpool’s clash against the Blues, though Mac Allister’s countryman was denied.

Jurgen Klopp surprised many today with his starting XI that saw Liverpool begin their Premier League opener with no recognised holding midfielder, an issue that led to an incredibly open half.

With Liverpool working behind the scenes to sign a defensive midfielder, the Reds will hope Mac Allister is not pushed into a similar situation in upcoming Premier League matches, with Neville critical of his positioning.

The former Manchester United capatain said when spotting Mac Allister’s mistake in the midfield: “If you want to look at whether Liverpool need a holding midfield player, just look at Mac Allister here.

“Just watch him just let Enzo Fernandez go. If he had scored it would have highlighted the lack of defensive option in that position.”

Selling Fabinho was hardly in Liverpool’s plans this summer, yet the big error of not signing a replacement in time for the new season has exploited the Reds big time this evening against Chelsea.

Whilst Mac Allister can hardly be blamed for, the midfielder’s error today showed that Liverpool simply have to sign a defensive-minded central player if they’re to keep the backline watertight.

Clean sheets will be key in Liverpool going for silverware next season, and signing a defensive midfielder in the coming days has to be top of the Reds priority list.
