Liverpool’s proposed move to sign Moises Caicedo from Brighton is currently off.

The Reds looked in poll position to sign the Ecuador international this morning having had a bid accepted overnight. But throughout the day, a deal has looked more and more difficult to do, as Caicedo holds out to sign for Chelsea.

And according to Sky Sports Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg on Twitter, the Liverpool side of things is now finished.

“Yes, Moises Caicedo has rejected the possibility to join Liverpool immediately as there was an agreement between the club,” said the journalist. “The player definitely wants to join Chelsea! A transfer to LFC is off at this stage.

“Understand the player is waiting for Chelsea now – as it’s up to CFC to make a higher bid than Liverpool. More than €120m. Negotiations ongoing.”

Caicedo makes his choice

The longer the day goes on, the worse things start to look for Liverpool in their pursuit of Caicedo.

Nevertheless, you do wonder why, if Chelsea wanted him so badly, they haven’t yet stumped up the cash needed to make it happen.

The Blues haven’t been shy at splashing the cash throughout Todd Boehly’s spell as owner. You’d have thought that once the price was known, they’d have been straight in there.

Instead, there seems to be a reluctancy to match Liverpool’s offer. Until they do that, they won’t get anywhere.

Brighton have shown over and over again that they won’t bow to pressure from buying clubs. Chelsea should know that better than anyone.

If they hold firm, then there’s still a chance that Liverpool get this done.

Having bet so much on the Ecuador international, you can’t see the Reds sitting down and taking this lightly. Either Chelsea pay up, or Liverpool are still there.
