Southampton manager Russell Martin has admitted that he has no clue if Romeo Lavia will still be at the club amid growing interest from Liverpool.

Speaking to the Southampton Daily Echo, the Championship manager revealed that he is in the dark over the 19-year-old’s future after a summer of rumours and speculation surrounding Lavia’s Southampton future.

The Saints kick off the EFL season tomorrow night against Sheffield Wednesday, with Lavia and club captain James Ward-Prowse both expected to be involved despite uncertain futures at Southampton.

As a result, Liverpool could still have to wait some time before agreeing on a deal to sign Lavia, with the Reds already having two bids rejected for the midfielder this window.

And now, the teenager could feature tomorrow night for Southampton, with Martin saying about Lavia’s future: “Both [Lavia & Ward Prowse] will be involved tomorrow night as it stands.

“I don’t know if anything will change between now and then. Do I think they will be Southampton players by the end of the window? I have not got a clue.”

It might seem crazy to believe, but professional football returns to England this weekend after a summer break that has seemingly passed in the blink of an eye. Yet for Liverpool, it means Lavia is still a Southampton player.

The Reds are yet to strike a deal with the Saints for the 19-year-old talent, and as a result, the midfielder could now play Championship football before making his move to Liverpool this summer.

Whilst such a prospect isn’t as terrifying as first thought, it speaks volume on how hard this deal has been for Liverpool that Lavia could play for Southampton tomorrow, something the Reds should never have allowed to happen.
