Liverpool could reportedly allow Thiago Alcantara to leave this summer, even with the Reds selling Jordan Henderson with Fabinho to follow.

According to journalist Graeme Bailey, the Spanish international’s future at Anfield is still on the line despite Liverpool enduring a mass midfield exodus this window, with Thiago now the oldest player in the group.

James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita all left as free agents with Henderson and Fabinho both being lured to Saudi Arabia, with Thiago now the veteran of Liverpool’s current midfield options.

Praised by Mark Lawrenson as a ‘world-class’ player, Thiago has looked likely to leave Liverpool for most of the window amid interest from Saudi clubs as well as FC Barcelona.

And now, there’s still a chance that Thiago could leave Anfield this summer, even with Jurgen Klopp lacking significant experience and leadership in his midfield ranks.

Bailey said: “I still wouldn’t be surprised if Thiago went out to Saudi, there is still a bit of business to be done at Liverpool, that’s for sure.”

Thiago departing Merseyside this summer could, on paper at least, be a wise decision given the midfielder’s age and his current contract situation. Yet with the Spaniard the only Liverpool midfielder over the age of 24, his presence will be sorely missed.

As we know, Liverpool’s midfield overhaul has been quite dramatic this summer, and keeping around at least one experienced head could be key in Klopp making sure his new players and system fully settle.

Indeed, Thiago can establish himself as a leader amongst his new midfielders, and his presence could be key in the likes of Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai taking the reigns for Liverpool next season.
