Former Liverpool defender Jose Enrique has claimed that Virgil van Dijk should not be named captain after Jordan Henderson’s departure from Anfield this week.
Replying to a comment on Instagram, the Spanish pundit claimed that Andy Roberton or Alisson Becker would be better choices to take the armband, though Van Dijk is strongly rumoured to become the next Liverpool captain.
Enrique said: “It will be Virgil van Dijk. Even if I believe Robertson or Alisson will be a better choice. But, obviously, the boss knows better than all of us.”

Van Dijk has taken the captaincy in every pre-season game this summer, and with Henderson’s exit confirmed earlier this week, the Dutch international could soon be officially announced as the Englishman’s successor.
The defender, who Erling Haaland once labelled as ‘unreal’, has already word the captain’s armband for Liverpool before this pre-season as well as for the Dutch national team for the past few years.

Indeed, whilst Alisson or Robertson would have made for great Liverpool captains, Van Dijk is the obvious replacement for Henderson, with the centre-back having all the makings of taking his legacy at the club further.
Van Dijk is the perfect candidate to become Liverpool’s captain

Given all Van Dijk has done for Liverpool since joining the club, it would have been a crime to not hand the defender the captain’s armband based on just how much the Dutchman has done for the Reds and the community.
The 32-year-old remains one of the best defenders in the world and will play a key role for Liverpool next season in their bid to fight for the Premier League title and to get the Anfield side back on top of the footballing world.
As a result, Van Dijk is the obvious candidate to become Liverpool’s captain, with the centre-back a true representation of what everything the club stands for.
