AS Roma were reportedly interested in signing Fabio Carvalho on loan, with the Liverpool winger eventually joining RB Leipzig for the new season.

According to the Athletic, the Anfield youngster was subject to interest from Jose Mourinho’s side when the decision was made by Liverpool to loan out Carvalho, with AC Milan, Burnley and Eintracht Frankfurt also keen.

As we know, Leipzig were the winning side as the Bundesliga giants announced the loan signing fairly early on in the transfer window, with Roma since moving on the signing former Olympique Lyonnais star Houssem Aouar for free.

With Mourinho still at the helm for Roma, there’s no telling how Carvalho could have developed with the Italian side given the former Chelsea and Manchester United manager’s stance on playing young players.

The Portuguese coach has formed an unwanted reputation over the years for favouring older names in his squads rather than giving youth a chance, meaning Carvalho’s development could have stalled massively.

Indeed, Liverpool made the right decision in loaning the Portuguese youth international to Leipzig, where Carvalho will likely be a regular in both the Bundesliga and the UEFA Champions League.

Lauded as ‘special’ by Harvey Elliott, Carvalho still has plenty of time ahead of him to become a feature for Liverpool in the starting XI, yet joining Roma and Mourinho would have done the winger zero favours.

As we know, the Serie A manager is as far from the ideal coach a young player like Carvalho wants, with the Liverpool man likely to be a bench warmer had he moved to Roma this summer.

Thankfully, disaster was averted in moving to Leipzig, and Carvalho can now focus on getting his career back on track where the winger can make a name for himself in Germany with one of the biggest clubs in the country.
