Jason MacAteer has pointed out that Joe Gomez and Joel Matip both looked exhausted in Liverpool’s 4-4 pre-season draw against Greuther Furth.

Speaking on LFCTV, the former Red and pundit noted how the two defenders looked shattered in Liverpool’s thrilling tie against the second-tier German side, with Gomez and Matip both struggling against Furth.

The duo were sloppy as the pair shipped a worrying four goals in the second-half, with Mohamed Salah the late hero for Liverpool in what was a low-key affair in Bavaria.

With Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate the clear starting duo for Liverpool in the centre-back department, Matip and Gomez have some way to go if they’re to compete for a position in the starting XI.

And for MacAteer today, the pair both looked tired and exhausted after just one half of football, a worrying sign heading into the new Premier League season next month.

MacAteer said: “I looked at Joe Gomez and he looked like he was labouring there, decision making, it’s not sharp. When does Joel Matip try and play a ball inside his own box with the outside of his foot? It’s lazy. It’s just tiredness.”

Liverpool’s performance against Furth was not for the faint of heart, with the Anfield side looking sloppy at the back and gifting goals that could prove costly when professional football returns.

And for fans and pundits, the drop off from Konate and Van Dijk to Matip and Gomez is a real eye-opener, with Jurgen Klopp now having a serious problem on his hands for the upcoming window.

A new central defender to bridge the gap in quality between the two pairings might now be needed once central midfield has been sorted, and such a signing could be what helps Liverpool push for the title once again next season.
