Mikel Arteta will reportedly soon make Romeo Lavia Arsenal’s new transfer priority, with Liverpool also chasing the Southampton midfielder.

According to DH, the north London manager will make a move to sign the 19-year-old if Thomas Partey is sold, a prospect that is growing by the day amid interest from Saudi Arabia. And as a result, Arsenal could now look to overtake Liverpool for Lavia.

As per the report, Southampton want as much as £50m for the Belgian international this summer, a fee both Arsenal and Liverpool will only realistically meet if both clubs can pull off a big sale in the coming days. However, that’s what both teams are doing as we speak.

Fabinho’s proposed move to Al-Ittihad is believed to be heading into the final stages, a transfer that will net Liverpool as much as £40m. Yet should Arsenal sell Partey beforehand, the Gunners could easily beat their Premier League rivals to Lavia.

Indeed, this transfer is likely going to come down to the wire. And although Liverpool might still feel confident in getting a deal done for Lavia, Arsenal’s newfound confidence should be something that the Reds must be worried about.

Arsenal have been nothing short of ruthless this window, with Arteta landing all three of his major targets with no real threat from rival clubs in a £200m spending splurge. And as a result, Liverpool might have to watch their backs when it comes to Lavia.

Whilst the Belgian international might get more minutes at Anfield than the Emirates, there’s no denying that the prospect of playing for arguably the most exciting team in Europe might be a tempting proposition for Lavia, which makes Liverpool’s bid for the midfielder that more important.
