Sepp van den Berg has been spotted in the German city of Frankfurt as he prepares to leave Liverpool.
Van den Berg had a frustrating season last time out, with injury ruining an initially promising spell at Schalke. The Gelsenkirchen side had reportedly been keen to take the Dutchman on-loan once more, but their relegation made that unlikely
But now, as per journalist Florian Plettenberg on Twitter, Van den Berg is due to head back to the Bundesliga for 2023/24 anyway. And he could even be doing so on a permanent basis.

“Sepp van den Berg: Spotted in Frankfurt in the last minutes. The player arrived today from Liverpool,” Plettenberg wrote this morning.
“He has the permission to negotiate, FSVMainz05 [in] pole position now! But two more clubs from Germany are interested.
“Mainz boss Heidel wants to finalize the deal soon. More talks with LFC about a loan or permanent deal are scheduled.”
Van den Berg set for Bundesliga loan
With The Athletic now reporting that Van den Berg is on the verge of joining Mainz, it looks like the other interested parties have missed out.
However, the move will reportedly be on-loan, with the 21-year-old to return to Liverpool in a year’s time. That’s good news.
Before his injury last season, Van den Berg had looked like a really good prospect. Having spent an impressive 18 months at Preston North End, the move to Schalke seemed like the perfect step in his development.

There were perhaps even hopes that Sepp could join the Liverpool first team squad for this season.
Fate had other plans though, with an ankle injury ruling the Netherlands U21 international out for around seven months. More or less a whole season.
He’ll be hoping for better this time around. If he does impress for Jurgen Klopp’s old side, maybe he’ll be primed to take over from Joel Matip, for instance, next season.
All the best Sepp, go and kill it out there!
