Alexis Mac Allister has admitted that he was trying to foul Diogo Jota during his first day of Liverpool training yesterday.

Tuesday was an exciting day for Reds supporters as they got a first look at Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai as Liverpool players. And speaking to the club’s Twitter account after the sessions had finished, Mac Allister was asked to name his highlight of the day.

“My first highlight was I tried to make a foul on Diogo [Jota] when we were doing the lactate test!” smiled the 24-year-old. “It’s nice. It’s nice to be here with my teammates. Of course a tough day, but it’s nice to start pre-season like this.”

Mac Allister is Liverpool’s first Argentine player since Maxi Rodriguez left the club in 2012. But that doesn’t mean there’s no one at the club to help him settle in.

The Reds have plenty of Spanish speakers, and Mac Allister looked to be chatting away with the likes of Adrian and Luis Diaz during his first day yesterday.

As a Portuguese, Jota may also be able to help him in that respect too. And it sounds as though the pair have created a good connection straight away.

That could be important to Liverpool, with Mac Allister and Jota potentially linking up on the Reds left.

The Argentina international appears to have been slated to fill the left-sided role in Liverpool’s midfield three. Jota meanwhile has regularly deployed on the left of the forward line since his £45m signing from Wolves in 2020.

With both players acting in somewhat fluid roles, a good understanding between them will be necessary.

The same can certainly be said for Mac Allister and Diaz, as well as Darwin Nunez. Thankfully, the World Cup winner will be able to communicate and get along with all three. That will help his integration immeasurably. Just don’t go fouling Diogo too much Alexis, we had enough of his injuries last season!
