Report details what Liverpool think about Man Utd signing Mason Mount

Liverpool staff reportedly think Chelsea’s demands for Mason Mount is unrealistic, with the Reds thinking Manchester United’s £60m bid is too high.

According to the Liverpool Echo, the Anfield side were unwilling to match what the Red Devils had offered to sign the England international, with Mount expected to join United this week in a deal worth £60m in total, a figure that Liverpool were simply not going to put down.

As a result, the Reds moved on to other targets, with Dominik Szoboszlai officially being announced as a new Liverpool player this weekend after Jurgen Klopp’s team triggered the 22-year-old’s £60m release clause, a deal that the club believe presents better value in the market than Mount.

With Szoboszlai two years younger than Mount and arguably the more talented and versatile player, it makes a lot of sense why Liverpool insiders believe the Hungarian international is a better overall deal than the Chelsea playmaker, who United are set to announce at some point this week.

Indeed, Chelsea will be pleased to finally get Mount off their book ahead of his move to United. And for Liverpool, they can feel happy with themselves knowing that they didn’t get sucked into a bidding war with their English rivals for a player who not even remotely worth £60m.

Mount is clearly a talented player who still has the potential to become one of the best midfielders in the Premier League. However, with just one year left on his contract, £60m is a ridiculous transfer fee for Chelsea to demand, one that Liverpool know was too high to pay yet one that United had no issues coughing up.

And as a result, it might not take long for Erik Ten Hag’s side to realise they have drastically overpaid for the England international, especially with United in more desperate need for a new centre-forward and goalkeeper rather than another silky midfielder.
