Dominik Szoboszlai is Liverpool’s newest signing but has one of the hardest names to pronounce in football. So just how do you say his name?
Liverpool’s latest signing is Dominik Szoboszlai, who joined from Red Bull Leipzig for £60 million. He is Jurgen Klopp‘s second signing of the summer, following the acquisition of Alexis MacAllister from Brighton a little earlier in the window.
He looks like a real talent. A phenomenal striker of a football, the Hungarian will strike fear into many Premier League goalkeepers over the course of the 23/24 season.
He’ll also be striking fear into the hearts of Premier League officials, who will be praying he doesn’t get carded, with a name ever so difficult to spell. It’s even harder to pronounce! So here’s how…
How to say Dominik Szoboszlai
As shared on Liverpool’s official Twitter page, here’s a video from the man himself on just how to pronounce Dominik Szoboszlai.
Will Dominik Szoboszlai have a nickname at Liverpool?
Notoriously when a player with a long surname arrives, a nickname is derived for them to make it easier. Bobby, Robbo, Fab and Carra have all been shortened variations for player names in the past – so what’s in store for the Hungarian?
Well according to the announcement from the club, the hashtag ‘#SzoboSigns’ was used. This indicates that he’ll probably be known as Szobo from now on, with the full version far too difficult to continuously type out!
This is pronounced ‘Sobo’, with the ‘Z’ in Dominik’s name actually deemed as silent, as shown in the video above.
Where does Szoboszlai rank in Liverpool’s most expensive signings?

The 22-year-old is the fourth most expensive signing in Liverpool’s history. Here are the top five.
- Virgil Van Dijk (£72m)
- Darwin Nunez (£68m)
- Alisson (£66m)
- Dominik Szoboszlai (£60.1m)
- Naby Keita (£51.5m)
Let’s hope he’s worth his weight in gold!
