Jose Enrique has suggested that Liverpool have made a mistake in missing out on James Maddison, who recently signed for Tottenham in a £40m deal.
Taking to Twitter, the former Anfield defender lauded the England international after news broke that Spurs had completed a deal for the 26-year-old, with Enrique claiming that Maddison could have been a better signing for Liverpool than Tottenham.
With Liverpool on the hunt for a creative midfielder, Maddison would have ticked a lot of boxes for Jurgen Klopp’s side. However, with Dominik Szoboszlai on the verge of signing for the Reds, this issue is now no longer a concern given what the Hungarian is capable of doing.
Indeed, although Szoboszlai will cost more than Maddison, Liverpool have arguably got a better deal given how much younger the versatile winger is compared to the now-Tottenham midfielder. With pundits and fans already labelling this latest transfer as a good piece of business for the Reds.
Liverpool right to move for Szoboszlai over Maddison this summer

There’s no denying Maddison’s credentials as a Premier League player, with the former Leicester City star one of the best playmakers in the division in recent seasons as well as a reliable source for goals. Yet with what Liverpool are looking to achieve, signing Szoboszlai makes more sense for the Reds.
As we know, Szoboszlai is a whole four years younger than Maddison and likely earning a significantly lower wage than his Tottenham counterpart. And for Liverpool, the Hunagrian’s ceiling could be significantly higher than the 26-year-old under Klopp’s coaching.
