Liverpool were reportedly convinced they had a real chance at signing Mason Mount this summer, though Chelsea and Manchester United have ruined any potential deal.
According to journalist Neil Jones, the Reds felt they had a ‘genuine chance’ of landing the 24-year-old heading into the transfer window. However, once it became evident that Chelsea wanted a hefty transfer fee for Mount coupled with United’s interest in the player, Liverpool’s hopes quickly faded.
Despite the prospect of working with Jurgen Klopp, Mount’s preference in the past few weeks has been to join Erik Ten Hag at Old Trafford. And with United now having three bids rejected for the 24-year-old, there’s a belief that the playmaker will eventually sign for the Red Devils.

As a result, Liverpool’s chances of signing Mount feel close to zero. And although there could be hope of a move being reignited should United fully drop out and Chelsea lower their asking price, the odds on these two events happening seem impossible in the current landscape.
Indeed, Mount would have been a dream midfield signing for Liverpool this summer. However, given what has happened since the end of the season, the Reds can be forgiven for now thinking that their chances of landing the midfielder are as low as they have ever been.
Liverpool could regret not pushing hard enough for Mount

Mount is without question one of the most talented players in England’s current pool of midfielders. And at Liverpool, the Chelsea star could have taken his games to new levels under Klopp and surrounded by world-class players. Which is why the Reds could regret giving up so easily on the 24-year-old.
As we know, United are currently stalling in their attempt to sign Mount. And although Liverpool are unlikely to move for the midfielder anytime soon, there could be some questions around Anfield that the Merseyside club threw in the town so quickly for the Chelsea star this summer.
