Tottenham are reportedly preparing to submit a proposal to sign VfL Wolfsburg defender Micky van de Ven, with Liverpool also chasing the centre-back.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the north London side are keen to advance talks with the Bundesliga side to sign the Dutch international, with Van de Ven one of the most coveted defenders in the market this summer after a breakout year at Wolfsburg.

The update will come as a major blow for Liverpool, who only recently looked like the favourites to sign the £26m-rated defender. However, Tottenham now look primed to beat the Reds to Van de Ven in what could be a statement transfer from new Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou.

Indeed, Liverpool could have done with a defender like Van de Ven this summer. Yet with Tottenham now preparing a proposal and looking to push the deal through with Wolfsburg, the Reds could soon be fighting against the clock to secure the Dutchman’s signature ahead of their Premier League rivals.

Van de Ven has exploded onto the scene after a 12 months to remember for the Dutch defender, and for Liverpool, they can’t allow the centre-back to slip through their fingers this summer, especially to a Premier League rival in Tottenham.

As we know, both sides will be pushing for the top-four next season. And with Van de Ven showcasing last year that he is good enough to start in England, Liverpool will have to do all they can to ensure that the youngster doesn’t end up at Tottenham, who could be well and truly back if they land the centre-back.
