Jurgen Klopp loved what £60m player did on international duty last week, now he wants to sign him

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was impressed by Federico Chiesa’s goal for Italy against the Netherlands last weekend.

Chiesa is reportedly a target for Liverpool this summer. Having grown unhappy with Juventus manager Max Allegri, the 25-year-old is said to be looking for a new challenge.

Digging a little deeper into where things have gone wrong for Chiesa at Juve, The Daily Mail today reiterate Liverpool’s interest in him. They claim that Klopp has ‘always been a fan’ of the Italian, and is interested in signing him. Indeed, it’s reported that Chiesa’s goal for his country last Sunday ‘did nothing to harm’ the German’s feelings towards him.

To sign the former Fiorentina man isn’t going to come cheap, though. It’s claimed that Juventus will ask for around £60m to sell Chiesa. Both Newcastle and Aston Villa are said to be better placed than Liverpool to meet those demands.

From the player’s point of view, he’s reportedly happy for the ‘once in a lifetime’ chance to join the Premier League. Chiesa is said to speak perfect English and has always planned to play in England.

With no other Italian club able to match his wages, that looks to be where he’s heading.

Chiesa takes Virgil to the cleaners

If Chiesa was attempting to impress any potential suitors this summer, then Sunday was his last chance to do that.

Thankfully for him, it looks as though he managed to do it with both hands. He certainly caught Jurgen’s eye anyway, apparently.

From a Liverpool point of view, Chiesa’s goal itself is actually a slightly tough watch. Approaching the penalty box from the left wing, the Juve attacker sells Virgil van Dijk with the slightest of dummies.

With Virgil expecting Chiesa to slalom inside onto his (slightly) stronger right-foot, the forward instead takes his offer up of going down the outside. A little step-over is unfortunately enough to fool Liverpool’s No.4.

Having seen off Van Dijk, Chiesa then slots a left-footed finish back across the goalkeeper into the far corner.

It perhaps wasn’t the cleanest goal in the world, but it did showcase two very good things about Chiesa. Firstly, he really is incredibly two-footed. This could be important to Liverpool, who really need someone to fill in for Mohamed Salah at times.

Secondly, it showed how good he can be when attacking in one-on-one situations. He was one of the most explosive players about prior to his injury in 2021. After a period of rehabilitation, he could yet get back to that. If he could do it at Liverpool, we’d have a top player on our hands.
