Liverpool have been urged to make a move for Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan, though the Germany international is now seemingly heading to FC Barcelona.

Speaking on Sky Sports News’ Transfer Show, Robert Earnshaw tipped the Reds, as well as Arsenal and Manchester United, to move for Gundogan. However, the 32-year-old is now close to agreeing on a deal with Barcelona as a free-agent signing as per Football Espana.

The midfielder’s contract with City is due to expire at the end of this month, leading to many rumours on where Gundogan will end up this summer. However, it now appears that the £25m signing will head to Catalonia in the coming days.

Yet for Earnshaw, Gundogan could have done a job at Liverpool, with the former striker saying: “He is the most underrated world-class player there is out there. He knows in the big moments, he delivers, so he does everything a top, top midfielder does, and for some reason, people still put him under the radar.

“I think he is unbelievable. If he goes, then somebody is going to get an unbelievable player. If I am another football club, then I am thinking ‘Gundogan is my number one target’. If I was Arsenal, Liverpool, or Manchester United even, but I doubt he will go there. What a huge, huge asset he will be.”

Liverpool’s quest to overhaul their midfield this summer could have led the Reds to Manchester, where Gundogan would have been a world-class signing given his incredible record for City and his knack for turning up at the right time in the season.

Indeed, a deal would have been difficult based on Liverpool’s rivalry with City. But with Gundogan a free-agent and close with Jurgen Klopp, a transfer could have been possible had Barcelona now made such a strong push to land the German international.
