Andy Robertson has claimed that Liverpool are aiming to win the Europa League next season.

The Reds will play in Europe’s second competition for the first time in seven years in 2023/24, having finished fifth in the Premier League. It’s set to be a humbling experience for Liverpool fans and players, who have played in three Champions League finals in the years since, winning one.

But, speaking to Football Daily today, Robertson struck a defiant tone. Although admitting his disappointment at missing out on the top table, the left-back said Liverpool will aim to win every competition they’re in.

“Pre-season we’ll just go for everything we’ve got, we have to do that,” said the 29-year-old. “Obviously, we missed out on Champions League which was hugely disappointing, but we’ve got to go for every trophy going and that includes the Europa League.

“Next season we’ve got to be better, we’ve got to be pushing at the top again and hopefully we can do that.”

Liverpool set for Europa revenge

This is good to hear from Robertson. Liverpool shouldn’t be turning their noses up at the Europa League, not at all.

The Reds haven’t won the trophy since 2001. It’s also the only trophy Jurgen Klopp has competed in at Liverpool and not won. Having lost in the final in 2016, Jurgen will be determined to put that right.

And, at the end of the day, this is a Reds squad full of winners. Their pride may be hurt at not playing among Europe’s elite, but the best way to put that right is by winning the whole thing.

Having a look over the teams currently due to participate in the Europa League next season, there’s no reason they can’t do that.

If they manage it while also having a good go in the other trophies and the league, the disappointment will fade away. As long as Liverpool’s time away from the Champions League is just a one-year hiatus, fans won’t mind at all.

Winning the competition is also a route back into ensuring that is the case. With top-four status in the Premier League by no means assured, that can’t be sniffed at.

So, despite all the doom and gloom of playing on Thursday night’s once more, we’re actually looking forward to it. More importantly, it sounds like the Liverpool squad are too.
