Virgil van Dijk hints that Liverpool could soon make contract decision

Virgil van Dijk has hinted that Liverpool could soon offer him a new contract with the defender heading into the final two years of his current deal.

Speaking to the press via the Liverpool Echo, the Dutch international revealed that he believes he is considered an important player for the team, and Van Dijk teased that he could hear news on a new contract with the Anfield side in the coming months.

At £220,000-a-week, Van Dijk is one of the best-paid players at Liverpool and one of the highest-earners for a centre-back in all of Europe, and there’s a strong chance that the Reds could offer the 32-year-old a new contract next season.

With two years left on his current contract, Liverpool will want to start acting now to sign Van Dijk to a new deal, and the defender himself is confident that talks could start soon, with the former Southampton man seemingly keen to remain at Anfield.

Van Dijk said on his contract: “I still have two years left on my contract and I assume that they (Liverpool) still consider me important for the team. If not, I am sure I would have heard about it. My contact with the manager is good and I feel very positive about things again.”

Van Dijk’s importance in the Liverpool squad has never been bigger, with the centre-back commanding a key role in the squad as a leader and as a presence in the defence, and Liverpool have to ensure that they extend the defender’s deal as soon as possible.

With Liverpool undergoing a huge squad transformation in the next 12 months, keeping Van Dijk around and happy with be massive in Jurgen Klopp taking his team to the next level in a new form, and the Reds have to begin talks with the Dutchman soon over a new contract to keep this plan on track.
