Real Madrid are reportedly interested in Liverpool icon Roberto Firmino as a backup option to Kylian Mbappe, who is once again linked with the Spanish giants.

According to Defensa Central, the Brazilian international is an option for Los Blancos if they fail to sign Mbappe this summer, who could be on the move from PSG after recently alerting the French giants that he won’t be extending his contract next summer.

As per the report, Firmino is on Madrid’s shortlist and could now be an option to lead the line next season if Mbappe once again fails to make the move to the Spanish capital, with the former Liverpool forward leaving Anfield last month as a free agent.

Lauded as a club legend by Virgil van Dijk, Firmino is yet to indicate where he wants to move this summer. Yet with Madrid interested and now viewing the striker as an alternative to Mbappe, the La Liga giants could be too good to turn down for the 31-year-old.

Indeed, leading the line for Madrid is a dream for any attacker in football. And for Firmino, this could now become a reality should Mbappe once again slip through the Spanish side’s fingers, a possibility that could become a reality in the weeks to come.

Firmino is very much at the top of his game having left Liverpool, and whilst Madrid fans will be desperate for Mbappe to make the move this summer after years of links, the Brazilian international could be the perfect backup should a blockbuster transfer fail to materialise.

As we know, Firmino is one of the most intelligent attackers in all of football, and at a club like Madrid, the South American maestro could become a superstar yet again at Europe’s biggest club having already forged a legacy for himself at Liverpool.
