Cody Gakpo has hailed Mohamed Salah as the ‘real leader’ of the Liverpool forward line.

Gakpo and Salah have built up a good understanding during their six months spent at the club so far. Both have been key players since the Dutchman arrived in the January transfer window.

And in quotes from The Mirror today, Gakpo hailed the form he’s seen from Salah since he joined Liverpool.

“At Liverpool, there is someone running the attack called Mo Salah,” said the 24-year-old. “I can’t speak highly enough about Mo. All the things he has produced on the pitch as a forward and the way he has been performing at top level for so many years is so impressive.

“That is why I see this man as the real leader of our forward line.”

Salah sets the example

As we begin to look ahead to another season at Liverpool, it’s hard to accept that only one of the celebrated trio of Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane now remains.

At times, it had looked like Mo might actually be the first of the three to leave the club. Rumours often swirled around him and before the Egyptian signed his new contract last summer there was a real threat that he could leave.

Instead, it was Mane who jumped ship first, joining Bayern Munich in an ill-fated deal 12 months ago.

A year later, Firmino has joined him, making an emotional Anfield exit after eight glorious years.

So, with Mo now the only forward at the club for longer than three years, he is the undisputed leader. In terms of experience and status but also in goals, assists and general contribution, there’s no touching the Egyptian King.

Thankfully, you get the feeling that’s something that Salah will cherish, rather than bear. Our No.11 has never shied away from taking responsibility and always does his utmost to drag the team forward.

Now 31, he’s one of the most senior players in the Liverpool side. Always an example to the younger players in the team, it’s time for Mo to really step up following the departures of James Milner and Firmino. As Gakpo points out, he’s more than got it in him.
