Argentine national media deliver interesting verdicts on Alexis Mac Allister’s international display yesterday

Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister wasn’t his usual self for Argentina during a win over Australia yesterday.

It’s been a whirlwind couple of weeks for Mac Allister. Signing for Liverpool is one thing, but having put pen to paper last Thursday, the 24-year-old then jetted off to Beijing to link up with the World Champions.

So, perhaps it’s understandable that TyC Sports note that Liverpool’s new No.10 looked ‘fatigued’ during his 60 minutes on the pitch.

Handing him a six out of ten, they note that Alexis wasn’t as dynamic as usual, and was too often too far away from the Australian goal.

Having seemingly had a relatively subdued time of it, Mac Allister was subbed for Giovani Lo Celso with half an hour to play. Given the busy nature of the last few weeks, we think the former Brighton man deserves a free pass in this one. Better to come.

Mac Allister feeling the fatigue

It was always likely to be a tough assignment for Mac Allister yesterday. The fact he’s having to play at all really highlights just how pointless these end-of-season internationals can be.

The Euro 2024 qualifiers and Nations League games are one thing, but Argentina’s 2-0 win over the Aussies was a friendly. A friendly played in China. With plenty of players from both sides based in Europe, it just seems completely unnecessary.

But, that’s football these days. Enough is never enough.

Lionel Messi and co have another game on Monday against Indonesia in Jakarta. Once that’s done, Mac Allister will be able to take some well earned rest before joining up with the Liverpool squad on July 10th.

Fingers crossed he doesn’t carry this fatigue with him after his little enforced jaunt across the world.

Still, we shouldn’t complain too much. Liverpool finally have a World Champion in their team again. It’s been ten years since that happened, and Pepe Reina wasn’t exactly a regular starter for Spain.

For Argentina, Mac Allister very much is. It says a lot about his standing in their squad that Lionel Scaloni chose to start Alexis, even after such a tiring few weeks for him. There will be much more to come from him in an Argentina shirt, and he’s going to do it all as a Liverpool player.
