Liverpool have been told they’ll have to pay £75m to sign ‘fantastic’ player who Steven Gerrard loves

Inter Milan have already told Liverpool how much they’ll have to pay to sign Nicolo Barella this summer.

The Reds have been linked with a move for Barella as they look to beef up their midfield. But so far, nothing has ever come of it.

According to 90min now though, the Italian could soon be on the move. That’s because Newcastle United are reportedly preparing a £50m bid to bring Barella to the North East. This seems unlikely to be enough, however.

90min claim that both Liverpool and PSG have previously been quoted £75m by Inter to take their star midfielder. Unsuprisingly, neither have taken them up on that.

Convincing Inter to part ways with Barella might even be the easy part, though. The 26-year-old is reportedly happy in Milan and it’s claimed that only ‘something special’ could tempt him to leave the Champions League finalists. Irrespective of that, Newcastle are reportedly ready to test the waters.

Newcastle show their naivety

Newcastle’s interest in Barella has really come out of the blue. Nevertheless, multiple reports confirm that the Magpies are willing to push ahead with a deal for the Italian.

In some ways, it’s a real statement from Eddie Howe’s side. In others, it feels a little naive.

As 90min allude to, it isn’t like Barella doesn’t have higher level suitors. Top teams have been linked with trying to get him out of Inter for years. It never happens.

If Newcastle think they’re going to stroll in, slap £50m on the counter and walk away with Barella, they’re sorely mistaken.

Should they be willing to go as high as the £75m Liverpool were quoted though, it’ll be interesting to see what happens. It’s never felt likely that Barella would leave for the Premier League, but you never know.

If he does, the former Cagliari man will surely make an impact. Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard is a fan, raving about Barella’s recent display against England. Another Reds icon – Jamie Carragher – has also labelled the £75m star as being ‘fantastic.’ He’s got plenty of admirers.

Wherever this story goes next though, we don’t think it will concern Liverpool. They’ve linked plenty, but they won’t pay £75m. Let’s see if Newcastle will.
