Brentford striker Ivan Toney has admitted that he is a Liverpool supporter, with the England international also naming Virgil van Dijk as one of the best defenders in football.

Speaking to Kick Game, the 27-year-old attacker said “I’m a Liverpool fan” when asked about the hardest defenders he has faced in the Premier League, with Toney claiming that Van Dijk is a centre-back he admires due to his Liverpool links.

With 20 goals in the Premier League last season, Toney was one of the most lethal finishers in the division, prompting strong reports that a £50m move could be on the cards this summer. However, an eight-month footballing ban from the FA has all-but quashed these rumours.

Indeed, Tony Cascarino recently suggested that Toney could be a good signing for Liverpool after impressing against the Reds last month. And even with an eight-month ban, the striker could still find himself angling for a big move in the January window.

However, although Liverpool could do with a powerful striker like Toney for their attacking ranks, Jurgen Klopp seems very set on the players he already has, with Darwin Nunez also a player who could soon develop into a forward who is similar to the Brentford man.

Toney’s form last season firmly established the former Peterborough United striker as a star in the Premier League. And whilst the forward is deserving of a big move at some point in his career, Liverpool might be a poor choice even with the player himself a fan of the Reds.

Klopp’s attacking options are the perfect mix of quality forwards now as well as players who can get better in the future. And with Nunez one of Liverpool’s most expensive signings ever, the Reds should give the Uruguayan striker a chance to develop and prove himself rather than splashing the cash on someone like Toney.
