Werder Bremen striker Niclas Fullkrug has seemingly stated that Liverpool have made a mistake in allowing Naby Keita to leave for free this summer.

Speaking to BuliNews, the Germany international spoke about the midfielder’s move to Bremen, with the Bundesliga side announcing that Keita had signed a long-term contract with the club after being released by Liverpool at the end of his contract.

Keita’s Liverpool career was plagued with injuries and was dotted with few memorable moments. Yet many believe that the 28-year-old returning to Germany could be a great move for the midfielder, who was a superstar in the division with RB Leipzig prior to moving to Anfield.

Indeed, Keita might not have set the world alight in England with Liverpool, but there is a real excitement around Bremen over the midfieer’s arrival, with Fullkrug saying about the signing: “The transfer of Naby Keita is definitely an extremely good transfer.

“It was clear to everyone at the club that we had to improve in quality, that we needed players to make a difference. And then signing someone like that on a free transfer from Liverpool FC is of course incredibly strong and is also a good sign to the outside world for further transfers and the current situation at Werder Bremen.”

Keita will always remain one of Liverpool’s great ‘what ifs’, and with the midfielder now back in Germany with Bremen, the Guinea international has a real chance at reviving his career in the Bundesliga and getting back to his former best.

Of course, injuries could still be an issue for Keita in the months to come. Yet there’s no denying that Liverpool fans will want to see the 28-year-old return to the sort of form that made the midfielder once hailed as the heir to Steven Gerrard, a narrative that will be incredible to see.
