Liverpool have spoken with the agents of Leicester City midfielder James Maddison over a possible move to Anfield.

Maddison is expected to leave Leicester this summer following their shock relegation from the Premier League. And according to 90min, the Reds as one of the sides to have approached him in the past six months.

It seems that having spoken to the 26-year-old’s agents though, Liverpool decided not to follow up with any offer.

Instead, Maddison is reportedly poised to join either Tottenham Hotspur or Newcastle United. The clubs are claimed to be set to do battle for the England man, with Leicester looking for £55-60m.

Manchester United and Arsenal are also said to have enquired over Maddison, but like Liverpool, neither are following up.

Liverpool make Maddison decision

There will perhaps be a portion of the Liverpool fan base who would like to see Maddison at Anfield. The former Norwich player has stated his love of the stadium in the past and has been a consistently high performer in the Premier League.

He’s also decidedly more prolific than any of the Reds current midfield options, including even new signing Alexis Mac Allister.

But from our point of view, Liverpool are absolutely right not to take initial interest any further.

According to 90min, Spurs are set to offer Maddison the chance to match the wages of top earner Harry Kane. With Kane on a reported £200k-a-week [Spotrac], a similar wage at Anfield would also see him in the top-bracket.

Although he’s clearly a very good player, we’re not sure that he’s worth that to Liverpool.

In contrast to someone like Mason Mount, Maddison isn’t the type of player who will run and run all day for you. He’s more of an individual, someone with exceptional quality on the ball to play the final pass or curl in a beautiful goal.

Those qualities are useful in every team, but it would perhaps still be fair to call Maddison a ‘luxury’ player. Right now, Liverpool need to build their midfield from the ground up again. There may be room for a player like Maddison within that at some point, but £60m can be much better put to use elsewhere right now. No, thank you.
