Chelsea playmaker Mason Mount has reportedly opted to move to Manchester United despite strong interest in recent weeks from Liverpool.

According to journalist David Ornstein, the England international is leaning towards a move to Old Trafford should the west London side agree to sell the 24-year-old, with Chelsea reportedly believed to want as much as £70m for Mount, who Liverpool have been keen to sign.

The Anfield side have long-looked the likeliest side to land Mount this summer. However, United have now taken a storming lead for the Chelsea playmaker, and a deal could soon be wrapped up between the Premier League superstar and the Red Devils.

Ornstein said: “My understanding is that Mason Mount is leaning towards Manchester United if Chelsea agree to sell him and talks are set to take place in due course. It seems increasingly likely he’ll be leaving. Liverpool were the early front runners but of course they aren’t going to be in the Champions League.

“Manchester United have always been there, Arsenal, too, would like to bring him to their club. But it’s Manchester United who have stepped forward as far as I know. Nothing is done, but I think that’s the direction of travel. Those other clubs have been made aware that United is Mount’s preference.”

Mount has looked bound for Liverpool for what feels like forever, yet with the latest update seemingly indicating that the midfielder is heading to Manchester, Jurgen Klopp’s side can only feel like they have been beaten badly by their biggest Premier League rivals.

As we know, Mount could have been a perfect midfield signing for the Reds as Liverpool look to overhaul their midfield options, and with United now set to land the England international, the Anfield side can only look back and think how much of a blow missing out on top-four really has been for their summer plans.
