Liverpool cool interest in 24-y/o midfielder despite looking 'likely' to join

Liverpool have reportedly cooled their interest firmly in Wolves midfielder Matheus Nunes despite looking like strong favourites to sign the Portuguese international.

According to CBS Sports journalist Ben Jacobs, the Reds were in the driving seat to sign the 24-year-old after just one year at Molineux with Wolves. However, Liverpool have now deemed Nunes as a non-priority target who could now remain with Julen Lopetegui’s side.

Jacobs said: “Matheus Nunes is another player to watch this summer. Earlier this year he looked quite likely to leave for Liverpool this summer, but he’s no longer their priority with plenty of other midfielders on the market. Julen Lopetegui would love to try and keep him, but it’s a long window and I still expect Premier League interest.”

With Nunes having a mixed year in the Premier League, it makes sense why Liverpool have demoted their internal eagerness to sign the midfielder, with Alexis Mac Allister and Mason Mount now seemingly taking priority ahead of the summer window.

However, that’s not to say Liverpool won’t move to sign Nunes at all, with the Reds still yet to secure a single new addition as we creep towards the transfer market, one in which Jurgen Klopp’s side want to bring in at least three central midfielders.

Nunes could still end up at Liverpool depending on other targets

As mentioned, the window is yet to even open, and for Liverpool, a lot can change between now and the end of August. And whilst Klopp wants all his new signings made before pre-season in early July, Nunes could still join Anfield depending on how events unfold this summer.

Indeed, transfer plans rarely go completely right for clubs, and given how big Liverpool’s summer plan is this year, Nunes could easily become a backup option depending on if the Reds miss out on a key target, with the 24-year-old an ideal Plan B for the Merseyside giants.
