Liverpool defender Sepp van den Berg has revealed that talks have taken place with Schalke 04 over extending his stay with the Bundesliga club.
Speaking to Waz via Lomazoma, the Dutch youth international revealed that discussions have been held with the German side over staying at Schalke beyond this season, with Van den Berg spending the majority of this campaign out on the injury table.
The Liverpool talent picked up a nasty ankle injury early on in the campaign with Van den Berg only now returning to full fitness and Bundesliga action, with Schalke now currently sat in 17th in the standings heading into the final match of the German league season.

Regardless of Schalke’s future, the 21-year-old Dutchman seems keen on staying with Die Konigsblauen next season, and Liverpool could grant the defender the chance to remain in Germany given his incredibly unlucky injury fortunes this year.
Van den Berg said on the prospect of staying at the Veltins-Arena for another season: “There have been talks with those responsible about remaining at Schalke. But we have to wait to see what happens. Our last two games of the season are the most important thing for now.”
Van den Berg could benefit from another year out on loan with Schalke

With a season as problematic as Van den Berg’s, another loan spell would make a lot of sense from Liverpool’s end. And staying at Schalke, even if they’re relegated again, could be ideal for the defender given how much he is enjoying playing in Germany.
Van den Berg has become a fan favourite in Gelsenkirchen. And with Schalke seemingly keen on keeping hold of the 21-year-old for another year, one more loan spell could be ideal for the Liverpool talent, who could return to Anfield in 2024 ready for the Premier League.
