Liverpool fans showed their appreciation to departing legend James Milner after today’s 1-1 draw with Aston Villa.
The draw, coupled with Manchester United’s win over Bournemouth, means that the Reds are virtually certain to play Europa League, not Champions League football next season.
Clearly, the result wasn’t what everyone had hoped for on an emotional afternoon at Anfield. But following the game, there was still time for supporters to raise their spirits and say goodbye to their vice-captain.
And as per journalist James Pearce, that’s exactly what they did. Sharing a video of the Liverpool players creating a guard of honour for Milner on Twitter, Pearce says the Liverpool fans chanted ‘there’s only one James Milner’ at the 37-year-old.
It may have been Roberto Firmino’s day, but how could we forget about Milner? Thanks for everything, Milly. All the best for the future!
There’s only one James Milner
Obviously, moods would have been improved at Anfield had today’s result given them three points instead of one.
Nevertheless, a single result pails in comparison to what Milner, and indeed Firmino, have given this club over the years.
Even if today had been a repeat of Liverpool’s 7-2 loss against Villa back in 2020, that feeling would have remained the same!
We can’t speak for Milly though, the failure to collect an important win today was no doubt still in his mind as he headed through the guard of honour at Anfield.
And that single-minded winning mentality is what has driven him on to become an Liverpool great. He’ll never be the glamour man that someone like Firmino can be, but what a player’s he’s been.
With the way modern football – and modern footballers – are going, you can’t ever see there being another like Liverpool’s No.7
There’s only one James Milner!
