Liverpool goalkeeper Adrian is locked in talks with the club over whether he’ll continue at Anfield beyond the summer.

As things stand, Adrian is set to leave Liverpool after fours years when his contract ends next month. But according to The Athletic, there is still a possibility that the 36-year-old will stick around.

They claim that player and club are currently in ongoing discussions over Adrian’s future. With a decision reportedly yet to made, there looks like hope for the Spaniard’s Liverpool career yet.

Having made just one appearance this season – in the campaign’s curtain-raising Community Shield – his departure would hardly be felt from a playing point of view.

But the ‘keeper is a popular member of the squad behind the scenes. With stalwarts like James Milner and Roberto Firmino already confirmed to be leaving this summer, Jurgen Klopp may see sense in keeping Adrian around.

Adrian set to stick around?

Two years ago, this news would have probably been greeted with despair by some Liverpool fans. Somewhat harshly, Adrian had become a disliked figure by a portion of the support.

But in the time since, the former West Ham United goalie has shown his influence. It probably helps that he hasn’t been asked to play as much as he initially was. But in truth, whenever Adrian is asked to a job these days – and that’s rare – he does it well.

If we’re being honest, he’s actually had a very good Liverpool career. He won a trophy in one of his first appearances – putting in a penalty shootout shift that Klopp called ‘incredible’ [The Guardian]. After that, he played a big part in the Premier League win of 2020, playing 11 games, all of which Liverpool won.

It’s also very clear just how well-liked Adrian is at the club. Amongst the the sizeable Spanish and Portuguese speaking group in particular, he’s a real part of the squad.

Forever positive and ready to give his teammates words of encouragement, there is certainly value in Adrian’s current role.

Besides, with Caoimhin Kelleher looking likely to depart, the veteran also leaving makes little sense. It’s hard enough to get the recruitment of a back-up goalkeeper right without also having to look for a number three.

So, if Adrian is happy in his current non-playing role, then we’d be all for him staying. There’s bound to be change at Liverpool this summer, it’s badly needed. But Klopp will be careful not to throw the baby out with the bath water.
