Liverpool could now sell their 25-year-old player, he’s been called ‘appalling’ this season

Liverpool may be willing to listen to any offers that arrive for centre-back Joe Gomez this summer.

Gomez only signed a new deal at Liverpool last year, with his contract now stretching to 2027. But this season hasn’t been a vintage one from the 25-year-old, and journalist Ryan Taylor says that Jurgen Klopp could now be open to selling Gomez.

“It’s hard to say really,” Taylor told GiveMeSport in regards to the defender’s future. “I think ultimately it will hinge on whether any options arrive on the table for him.

“I think Liverpool would probably be open to losing him and replacing him if they had a chance to get a decent fee.”

Turning twenty-six next week, Gomez is still relatively young. Despite his poor season, he’d still be sure to attract a good amount of interest and a relatively good fee if Liverpool were to put him on the market. Certainly something to think on.

Gomez decision set to be made

Joe Gomez really has had a funny old career at Liverpool. Arriving at the same time as the set-to-depart James Milner and Roberto Firmino, only Jordan Henderson now outlasts him in the current Reds squad.

But the stats back up the feeling that he just hasn’t done himself justice in that time. While Firmino and Milner have clocked up a combined 690 appearances between them, Joey G has played just 172 times.

Obviously, his main remit isn’t to score goals, but he hasn’t found the net a single time during that spell.

Not all of this is Gomez’s fault, of course. He’s been hampered by several really serious knee issues over the eight years he’s called himself a Liverpool player. The England international has also more than played his part in big successes for the club.

Nevertheless, it feels like with other long-serving players set to leave, maybe it’s time for Gomez to join them, too. This season may have seen him play a respectable 30 games in all competitions, but he’s not enjoyed the best time.

Indeed, pundit Darren Bent labelled him ‘appalling’ for his shambolic showing against Real Madrid in the Champions League. It’s hard to escape the feeling that had Ibrahima Konate played on the night of Liverpool’s 5-2 defeat, the Reds might have ended up winning the tie.

Still, there is value to having Gomez around as a versatile option at the back. It doesn’t now look like he’ll ever develop into the regular starter many had hoped he would, but we suppose that’s fine. Should someone stump up a good fee this summer though, there’s definitely a conversation to be had.
