Liverpool player unlikely to be in England’s next squad, Southgate won’t pick him

Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones is unlikely to get a call-up to the senior England team at the end of the season.

Jones has been in brilliant form for Liverpool of late, with teammate Jordan Henderson calling his performances ‘outstanding.’ After nine consecutive Premier League starts, in which the Reds are unbeaten, he could be on manager Gareth Southgate’s radar.

Southgate has a squad to prepare, with two games to come in June. And according to The Telegraph, the Three Lions boss was in the stands to watch Jones bag a brace at the King Power Stadium on Monday.

But despite that, the 22-year-old’s good form is said to be ‘unlikely’ to earn him a first senior call-up.

Instead, it’s claimed that Jones is set to join up with U21 squad for their European Championships campaign this summer. Keep plugging away, Curt.

Now twenty-two, Jones won’t be able to get away with travelling with the U21 squad for much longer. He needs to kick on and look for a senior call-up.

Just six weeks ago, that would have seemed impossible. Jones had barely played all season and looked about as far away from the England squad as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

But things change quickly in football. Jones is now one of the country’s most in-form midfielders. With the likes of Kalvin Phillips and even Henderson not assured of their international futures, the Scouser should have an outside shot.

As Southgate likes his senior players to do, Jones has ‘come through the system’ for England. He’s played for his country at U16, 17, 18, 19 and 21 level, scoring a lovely goal last time out in March.

In Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice, England already have two potentially elite options at their disposal. But beyond that pair, Southgate doesn’t have a whole lot of depth in centre-midfield.

Consequently, if Jones keeps his form up, a call-up may not be too far away. Fellow Liverpool youngster Harvey Elliott is another who could possibly put himself into this conversation, too.

But with Elliott out of favour and Jones in the form of his life, only one is a serious contender at the minute. Actually, according to this report, neither are. With two games of the season left though, there’s still time for Curtis to make himself impossible to ignore.
