John Aldridge has suggested that Liverpool could sell Thiago Alcantara this summer, with the Reds likely to bring in midfielders to replace the Spanish international in the long run.

Writing for the Liverpool Echo, the former striker tipped the £200,000-a-week playmaker to be sold by Jurgen Klopp in the transfer window, with Thiago again having a frustrating season that saw the 32-year-old spend close to half the campaign out through injury.

The Spanish superstar has just one year left on his contract, and with Liverpool ready to sign as many as three central midfielders this summer, Aldridge believes selling Thiago could be a good idea despite the midfielder’s incredible qualities when fully fit.

The Anfield icon said on what Liverpool should do with Thiago this summer: “With Trent now moving into midfield positions and potentially two or three signings coming in during the transfer window, I am wondering whether Thiago will go.

“He has only played roughly half of our games again and is getting older. Klopp could look to move him on to bring someone younger in and, given the way we work as a club, we have to bring money in somehow. As good as Thiago is, you need players who are fit all the time, young and get about the pitch.”

Thiago’s qualities is evident for all to see, and whilst Liverpool fans might not want to see the former Bayern Munich star leave this summer, selling the midfielder could be for the best considering the plans the Anfield side have in place for the window.

As mentioned, at least three new midfielders could be signed in the coming weeks, and given Thiago’s wage and injury record, the 32-year-old is an obvious candidate to leave this summer, with the Spaniard likely to command quite the amount of interest from top clubs.
