Eddie Howe compares Liverpool to Manchester City in press conference

Eddie Howe has likened Liverpool’s ruthlessness to Manchester City’s, with the Reds breathing down Newcastle United in the hunt for top-four.

Speaking to the press via the Chronicle, the Magpies manager claimed that Jurgen Klopp’s side were always going to be in the mix for a UEFA Champions League spot despite looking dead-and-buried as early as April, with Liverpool winning their last seven games in a row.

With two games left, Liverpool will need luck on their side if they’re to pip either Newcastle or Manchester United to one of the allusive top-four spots in the Premier League standings, with both sides having an extra game to play on their Anfield rivals.

Indeed, Newcastle qualifying for top-four would be one of the stories of the season, yet Howe is aware of the threat Liverpool pose, with the Toon boss saying: ”In my experience, I knew Liverpool were never far away because they are a top team and they are capable of going on runs of wins.

“They are very similar to Manchester City where they can win a group of games without blinking. They have got that experience. For us, we can’t look at Liverpool or compare ourselves to Liverpool. We just have to look at us.”

Nobody could have predicted Liverpool to be in with a realistic chance of finishing in the top-four, yet heading into their two final games of the season, Jurgen Klopp’s side can now do just that if the likes of Newcastle or United slip up in their three last fixtures.

For Howe, though, missing out on top-four now would be nothing short of disastrous given how good Newcastle have been all season, and the former AFC Bournemouth manager knows that Liverpool will strike when they have the chance to clinch a Champions League spot.
