Micah Richards has suggested that James Ward-Prowse could be a smart signing for Liverpool this summer having been relegated from the Premier League with Southampton.

Writing for the Daily Mail, the former Manchester City defender noted that the 28-year-old England international could be an ideal addition for Jurgen Klopp’s side, with Liverpool keen to sign at least two top central midfielders in the transfer market.

Ward-Prowse has been linked with a move to a big Premier League side for what feels like the majority of the midfielder’s career, and this summer looks set to finally be the window where the 28-year-old makes the leap, with Liverpool an ideal destination.

Regarded as one of the best free-kick takers in world football, the Portsmouth-born captain could be perfect for Liverpool and their new project under Klopp, and Richards has already backed the Reds to make a move for Ward-Prowse in the summer.

The pundit said: “He is a saleable asset for Southampton and plenty of clubs will be keen on him. He will be a smart buy for someone and it would not be the worst decision in the world if Liverpool, who need a replacement for James Milner, or Newcastle tested the water when the window opens.”

Whilst Ward-Prowse has been tagged with a £50m asking price, there’s every chance that the midfielder will be available for far less this summer, and Liverpool have to strike when the iron is hot for the Southampton superstar.

Liverpool are no strangers to signing players from relegated clubs, and Ward-Prowse has the quality to be a starter for Klopp next season if the German manager is willing to test Southampton’s next over their club captain and talisman.
