Alexis Mac Allister will reportedly only leave Brighton & Hove Albion for a UEFA Champions League club this summer, with Liverpool heavily linked with the Argentine international.

According to the Athletic, the 24-year-old is eager to play in Europe’s premier club competition, a dream that could prove to be a huge stumbling block for Liverpool if the Reds miss out on a top-four finish, a reality that is entirely possible.

Liverpool currently sit four points off Manchester United and Newcastle United with a game to spare, but with their Champions League destiny out of their hands, Jurgen Klopp’s side now face the prospect of added pressure in qualifying for the Champions League after Mac Allister’s stance.

Valued at £70m, the Brighton star has emerged in recent days as Liverpool’s priority signing when it comes to a new midfielder, and this latest update could throw a big spanner in Klopp’s plan to bring Mac Allister to Anfield in the summer.

Indeed, the midfielder has the potential to become a superstar at the right club, and with the South American dreaming big of playing in the Champions League, Liverpool could now have to rely on luck to win the 24-year-old’s signature in the coming weeks.

Fifth place would be deemed by Liverpool fans as a failure of the season, with Champions League football as big a pull as you can get in the game, yet whilst Mac Allister might want to play in the competition, the Reds could still land the Brighton star.

As we know, Liverpool are one of the biggest clubs in the world and are capable of convincing most players to join them if pushed hard enough, and based on recent reports, Mac Allister could be up for a move to Merseyside even if Klopp fails in his mission to get the Reds into the top-four.
